- en Elaine Theresa (Hachey) Freeman was born on March 24, 1940 in Lewiston, Maine. Her father, Leo Hachey, was Franco-American and her mother, Margaret Hachey, was Irish. When Elaine graduated from high school, she went to work for the telephone company and then, in the 1967, began working at Bates College in the Maintenance Department as a secretary and later became assistant director, retiring in 2001.
