The collection consists of five account and daybooks from the business of Matthew J. Caldbeck of St. Johnsbury, Vermont, and of his son, George Caldbeck, between 1884 and 1911. Loose leaf documents included with these account books include two sales slips for M. J. Caldbeck, Son & Company and three sales slips for A. L. Bragg in an account book from 1884 (Volume 1). Other account books include one daybook kept by George Caldbeck between 1891 and 1892 and two account books spanning 1907-1911 and 1907-1909 (latter in XMSC 114).Also included is a directory of pricing information for various business created by George W. Caldbeck and including the following businesses among others: Boston Plate & Window Glass Co., American Screw Company, Gregg and Sons (New Hampshire), Eagle-Picher Lead Company (New York), and Cabot's Cresote Stained Shingles (Massachusetts, New York, Illinois).

Matthew J. Caldbeck of St. Johnsbury, Vermont, was born on July 16, 1844 in Iverness, Quebec, Canada. Around 1874, he married Mary J. Sinnett/Sinott (born of Irish parents, ca. 1848 in Canada) in Danville, Quebec, Canada. The Caldbecks had five children: George W. (born ca. 1874, died 1928), Mary E. (born ca. 1877, married James Cosgrove), Maude E. (born ca. 1881), Gertrude F. (born ca. 1885), and Elizabeth J. (born ca. 1878, died 1925). Matthew J. Caldbeck was a contractor, a builder and a manufacturer (of doors, blinds, sashes, interior woodwork) and employed about twenty men. He is noted in the 1885, 1891, and 1910 Walton's Vermont Register. He died in May 1912 in St Johnsbury and is buried at Calvary Cemetery there.
