The Barre Ethnic Heritage Studies Project, sometimes shortened to "Barre Ethnic Heritage Project, " was funded by a $43,000 grant from the U.S. Office of Education, awarded through the Vermont Department of Education, for the period October 1, 1977, through September 30, 1978. The project was conducted out of the Aldrich Public Library with a state that included Karen Lane, Tina Bielenberg, and Bobbi Izzo. The Project was guided by a small executive committee and an advisory committee of about 16 members. Members of the advisory committee represented distinct ethnic communities including Scottish, Swedish, Franco-American, Yankee, Italian, Jewish, Irish, and Lebanese groups. The Project was active in the community and beyond organizing teacher workshops, forums at the library, presentations to community groups, and school group visits to their research office. The project also collected research materials and conducted oral histories which were housed at the Aldrich Library. They published four pamphlets under the title "Barre, Vermont: An Ethnic Bouillabaisse" on the early history of Barre, ethnic folklore in Barre, an ethnic chronology of Barre, and an ethnic bibliography (numbered 1, 3, 4 and 5, respectively).
